This is an excellent find of a rare, deeply carved, fully intact mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 80 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany" by "Eduard Herr and Sons, " one of the longest standing family clock makers in this region of the world! The clock is ornately hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.
It was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine. There are five, large, wavy, deeply hand carved grape leaves on the front and another carved grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. The clock has a large, beautifully carved bird on top and all is finished in the original varnished Mahogany which makes it even more stunning! The wood dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The back of the clock features a varnished backboard which is rare to find on a clock like this.
I removed the three screws holding it to the case before the listing so I could take pictures of the actual wooden back door and the movement. The original back is secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven, early rack style movement inside the case bearing the Eduard Herr name. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity.
The wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look new; sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.
The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! At least that's what is supposed to happen. Actually, the clock itself works just fine here and keeps good time. The cuckoo however, refuses to come out and complete his rounds...Not sure why but I suspect it needs an adjustment. I would ordinarily do this myself but I simply don't have the time any longer to work on the old clocks as I used to. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so expect to make some service adjustments or repairs once the clock arrives at its new home. Once you do, remember to service the clock at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.
The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hardwood backboard, an unusual, hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or other issues. It shows less than average signs of use and is just stunning on display! The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 14" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point, and about 10 or so across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it. Have the cuckoo repaired, repair it yourself, or leave it the way it is. If you like this item and I'm sure you do, then I know you'll love the other items.
