Up for sale we have a rare 9 Antique Stanley No. 98 Brass Bound Machinist Plumb and Level in Rosewood with Nailed on Brass Binding, Full Brass End Plates and Brass Top Plates.
This level has nailed on brass bindings used until 1902 when the Stratton patent expired, but Stanley offered until about 1911 when Stanley changed to the dovetailed with the difference being they went through the end plates where Stratton doweled them with the end plate covering the edge binding. Stanley also used the Handy Hold on the sides of all their levels at this point. This is also when Stanley first introduced brass screws on their machinists levels as scientists began to discover the effects of corrosion from dissimilar metals. The brass screws would not show up on standard production levels until during the 1920's. 98 versions sported the Type 6A Stanley Rule & Level Co.
The level is 9" L x 1"1/16" W x 2-1/8" Tall. Please see pictures and ask any questions.
