CANADIAN 4 PROVINCE RED ENSIGN 1868 ARMS ANTIQUE FLAG. This vintage flag measures 9 7/8 inches by 14 3/4 inches (251x363 mm) and is in excellent condition. The minor damage in the upper hoist appears to be the result of removing the flag from its original stick some years ago. The coat of arms features the arms of the four original provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick that formed Canada over 150 years ago in 1867.

Although this was the official Canadian coat of arms until 1921, most flag makers Followed the American pattern of recognizing new States with stars by adding the arms of the other provinces to the red ensign badge as they joined the Canadian confederation beginning with Manitoba in 1870. Therefore Canadian ensigns with the original four province arms are quite rare. This example is an excellent size for framing and display with other vintage Canadiana, or as a stand alone historic relic. The arms are unusual in that they are framed by a wreath with a beaver at the bottom.
