Nice Rare Antique Kitagawa Utamaro Woodblock Print with Silk Matted Frame 1800's  Nice Rare Antique Kitagawa Utamaro Woodblock Print with Silk Matted Frame 1800's
Approx: 20.25" H x 16.25" W (Framed) 14.5" H x 9.5" W (Visible). From High End Collector's Estate. Estimated Age (1800's), (Re Framed 1900's), Very Good Condition. Terrific Older Kitagawa Utamaro woodblock print.

This Japanese artist is legendary for his works in woodblock printing (with over 2,000 credited to him) and can be thoroughly researched online, his status is so renowned we could not try to capture it in a simple listing profile. The above noted, this print appears to be fairly (if not very) rare as we could not find this exact print anywhere in our sales searches or other sources going back over 20 years. We are priced far under that after recent price drop, so get it quick!!! We do not know what the writing on on our print says, if anyone does and would like to share, that would be great.

When we acquired the print it was simply offered as Kitagawa Utamaro, "Man and Woman" figures and that seems to agree with the similar one we found noted above, but we are not sure. The print is in very nice condition for the age, but shows some slight darkening and is a little darker at edges of print near matting.

This was very likely re-framed in the 20th century and put behind glass, but no way to know for sure exactly when, but likely mid century or earlier. This would explain the darkening near matting edges. There are a few light marks on matting and one area at lower left in print along cuff of the woman's sleeve that is slightly darker. Not sure exactly why, but none of aging or marks really effect the overall appeal of the print as can be seen in photo gallery. Although we sell a lot of Asian art and sculptures etc. We do not consider ourselves experts on such items, but try to pass on what we can when we have provenance. There is some writing on back of frame indicating materials used for framing and it is not common U. English writing, so this was likely framed in Europe or Asia. We did not remove the backing from frame as we did not want to disturb the artwork. The frame has some wear to gold painted edges, but glass is in good shape. The collector who owned this had some very nice Asian art, but we do not know much else about the print. We tried to capture all we could in pictures in photo gallery. Since the print is not dated from what we can read anyway, we did not assign an exact date. From all we can tell from our research, this may be a very early print as there is nothing to indicate otherwise, but the estate did not provide additional information regarding the piece. We are pricing based on other sales information we could find and due to it's rarity as a print. We do not require signature confirmation on most items, unless you request otherwise.
