One of the hottest areas of collecting in majolica is majolica animal humidors. These charming pieces were made by several different companies on the European continent, largely in Germany, Austria, France & Czechoslovakia & were unmarked other than incised numbers & letters. We are very pleased to claim that this is a very rare.

" AUSTRIAN MAJOLICA HUMIDOR, FROG FIGURINE ". In beautiful majolica colors has been in our possession for close to 30 years. He is in very good condition other than two small chips & a couple of glaze flakes (photos 7-10) which, when on display, doesn't distract from the beauty of this very rare humanized frog in his vibrant red jacket. At the end of the 19th century, the Victorian smokers turned from using snuff to smoking pipes. Humorous figural tobacco jars became popular, & those tobacco jars depicting animals were given out as promotional gifts at country fairs.

Most of these animal shaped humidors were produced by small potteries in the Bohemia area of Austria & Germany & were not marked. They were meant to be both useful & decorative with all of them allowing for the placement of a sponge in the lid to keep the tobacco moist. Where humidors were made in an e.

Ndless variety of shapes & forms, the animals are the ones that have retained their popularity, particularly those of animals dressed as humans. Some animals are more popular than others like cats, dogs, frogs & monkeys.

While in our home, this delightful porcelain objet d'art has been gently displayed & lovingly cherished. Ther than the few minor issues already mentioned (photos 7-9), which are nothing other than imperfections commensurate with age, he is in LOVELY ANTIQUE condition! Displays his vibrant colors like a rock star, & other than the two minor imperfections previously mentioned that are commensurate with his age, is in EXCELLENT ANTIQUE condition!

Imperfections in the glaze/paint, a slipped stitch, etc. ALL OF MY COLLECTIONS HAVE BEEN STORED IN A TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT IN OUR SMOKE-FREE, PET-FRIENDLY HOME.
