Vintage 106 Disston USA 13-1/2" Pruning Shears (5-1/2" Blades). Here we have a pair of VERY RARE Henry Disston #106 pruning shears. These shears come from an extensive collection of hand tools that is being liquidated. These shears have spent the better part of their life unused as part of this collection.
If you know what you are looking at, then you know just how rare and collectible this tool is. They are, as the saying goes; RARE AS HEN'S TEETH! Made by the Henry Disston company of Philadelphia, PA.The H Disston company was founded in 1840, and specialized in the manufacture of hand saws, and in fact held many patients raising the standard of saw manufacture in the US. Prior to this, American saws were inferior to English saws, the H Disston company changed all of that. As the company grew they expanded. The company dabbled in other edged tools (including shears), but this never became a large focus of the company and the endeavor was soon dropped. As a result, Disston tools other than saws are highly sought after by collectors.
These shears have a wonderful patina from their more than a century of life on this earth. There is only minimal pitting to the spring (see photo - there is no visible rust present as the collection's curator arrested the rust and cleaned the spring some time ago), and no other rust, chips, cracks, repairs, or apologies of any kind.In short, this is about as fine of an example of these RARE shears as you are likely to find anywhere. The rose bush clippings seen in several photos were taken with these shears just to show that they are still sharp and functional. If you are a collector of Disston saws and tools, here's a MUST-HAVE addition to that collection.
